Singapore Day 1 Part 2

Bring on Round 3 of Desserts!
Last we met, I was revisiting my day of eating in Singapore. I ate so much in the one day that I had to divide the posts into 2. Here I am inside Takashimaya Mall on Orchard Road. Here's the thing... at this point, I was already exploding from all the previous desserts  I had. I knew, that even though I had kaya (infused with egg, sugar, coconut & pandan flavors) toast already, I wanted more. I also knew that Ya Kun, a chain store in Singapore has decent Kaya toast. I say decent because I've had Ya Kun before & I know that it does not compare to the most amazing Kaya Toast I've ever had which was in Thailand.
But that's okay. Just ask the person to add double the chunk of butter they usually put in there & I'm good. I paid 30 cents extra for more of that killer butter!
Look at that closeup of the delicious bread. Yes!
*drool*
I also didn't forget to grab my another one of my favorite drinks... iced chocolate. They take the equivalent  of Ovaltine or whatever chocolate powder you're used to using & they just pour it over ice. Delicious & unhealthy like raw cookie dough. I love it. And check out the cute little carrying handles.

And that finally concludes my first half a day in Singapore. Whew... so much more to come. I then went home and slept on the hotel bed groaning in agony that I was too full & blamed it on eating too much. Then again I guess, it was my fault.

Happy Eatings!
I seriously love Singapore. Why my sister ever wanted to leave her home country is a mystery to me.

Singapore Day 1 Part 1

I've thought long and hard about how I should blog my latest Singapore trip. There were so many meals I just didn't know what to do with them. Should I do a post of all desserts? of all my favorites? I ended up deciding that the best way would be to re-narrate my trip would be to tell it like it happened. Be prepared... I eat a lot. So much that this dinner post has to be separated into 2 different posts!
I was hungry as you can see & super excited to be at Makansuta Gluttons Bay. This was the only tourist spot my sister was willing to go to as the food vendors are known for being much more expensive than other food courts.
There's a little over 10 stalls in this mini food court & it's filled with what Singapore is most famous for.
Tourists who aren't in the know like my mom & sister can stare at the colorful pictures & signs written in both English & Chinese.
Yum, yum, yum.
My sister clearly had other plans. She made it a point that we had to eat all of Singapore's most famous eats but we had to eat only the best of the best. This was the only place she made an exception to that rule.
I sat watching our bags while my mom & sister went to order to some food. I got to stare at posters of this amazingness.
Oh yes, I would like some of that!
The stands all pretty much looked like this. Nice & clean in true Singaporean fashion. I didn't mind it but as we all know the direst & most ugliest places have the best food.
I started my meal with some freshly squeezed sugarcane juice mixed with Calamansi.
Our shrimp with spicy sauce was yummy.
This is my absolute must have in Singapore & Malaysia. I love stingray! The sauce on the fish is already spicy but you need to then dip it in the other spicy sauce. You better like spicy when in Singapore!
Ah, satay! Beef & chicken. The satay here was disappointing. It was dry but I made do since i was hungry. Plus, the sauce is still better than anything you can get in Hong Kong or L.A.. The little white cubes are actually rice!
Radish cake!! Singaporean radish cake beats out Chinese radish cake hardcore. You can choose from white sauce or black sauce. We love the black! More flavor & more spice!
By now, we thought it was time for dessert! This was seriously the best part of dinner! Fried banana fritters. It beats tempura a lot but the kaya fondue was what made the meal! Imagine, the best, sweetest banana you can find fried in amazing, crispy batter & then dipped in the most awesome, hot fondue sauce! Yes!!!!
Cockles! You must be thinking what the heck-I thought you just had dessert! Why yes, I did but then my mom decided to go back to dinner and a main course. Yummy cockles that came right out of the shell dipped in chili sauce. This ain't no Americanized Sriracha sauce. No... this is much better!
Wow all this food for me? You shouldn't have! Look how small the cockles look!

At this point, I was already beyond full. I already had my dessert with the fried bananas but I knew I couldn't end a meal without having the signature Singaporean dessert-Ice Kachang.  Aloe vera, attap chee (palm seed), red beanssweet corngrass jelly, condensed milk top it all off for a taste of heaven! I was so full after this! It's huge! I know this picture makes it look small!
But even though we were full, I wanted more of that amazing banananess. I went back to get toast and kaya fondue, which was delicious as well but not as good the banana fondue! Ok... now I was done.
See how we ate until it turned dark? I'm a happy camper when I'm full.

Next stop! The amazing Mr. Loi's chicken rice! My sister did her research & found that the BEST hainan chicken rice in Singapore was at Tian Tian in the Maxwell Road Food Court. So even though I was about to explode, I knew I had to ride down and get in line. It was a beautiful day & I had just had an amazing meal.... but then it was closed!!!
What was Mr. Loi thinking? I came all the way from the U.S. and he decided that it was a good day not to wake up at 6AM and start making his chili sauce and rice? The nerve! As you can tell I was pissed... and just very, very sad.
What was one to do? Sit down & eat again of course. Here's some freshly squeezed sugar cane juice with calamansi & my favorite fruit soursop juice! The fruit looks like a cherimoya but it tastes like a mix between a citrus & coconut! It's so freaking good! Thank you Singapore!
This is my mom's must have. Bok biah. It's basically a fukienese burrito. It was blah here though. It was much better at another stop we went to after.
Fruit on a stick? Sounds good! We'll take 2 even though we're super full!
Ok... seriously I'm about to explode. Okay... maybe just some Mango shaved ice.

There's more food to come. This was only dinner #1 & #2 of the first day. I'm going to spilt our dessert part of the meal into another post!

Happy Eatings!

Preview of Singapore

Singapore was lots of fun because there's literally nothing to do there aside from eating! That's exactly how I like my trips. No history, minimal sightseeing, & lots of food, then more food, followed by more food. Here's a preview of what's to come because seriously it's going to take a very long time to blog everything I ate.

These pictures are courtesy of my sister and her self-proclaimed amazing picture taking skills. There were also a multitude of emotions we got to experience on our 3 night, 2 day trip to Singapore such as...
Happiness
 Disappointment
Sadness & anticipation
and get the fuck outta my way. I wanna stab you for this amazing food!

Fast Food Way Better Than McDonald's

Hong Kong is usually a place of excellent customer service everywhere & friendly people... until you go to fast food places that are super cheap. Then the crowd that goes to eat there is you get what you pay for status.
太興 is amazing. It's cheap like McDonald's style and has set lunches that are delicious. This is my must come to spot in Hong Kong each time I'm here, which is why there are multiple posts on it.
But before we start eating, we had to clean our own utensils. I mean technically they are "cleaned" already, but let's just be safe right?
Look at how delicious this BBQ pork is!!! Amazing!
And they also have the best milk tea in HK. They win awards all the time. I love how the ice the milk tea by placing it inside the bowl so it doesn't dilute the drink. Genius!

Happy Eatings!
Cheers to Fast Food!

How My Sister Spent $900 HK

We all have our things that we splurge on, but this is what my sister did with $900 HK dollars... that's basically about $100 US. She spent it on macarons from France & then proceeded to take over 100 pictures of them in different poses.

She got citron, raspberry, rose ginger, praline, pistachio, and salted caramel flavors at he Joyce boutique in Central. The pop-up shop is only open until the end of December.

She's very happy abut her purchase. You can view her 100 pictures on her blog or you can go and spend your own $900 HK.

A Meal that is Painful to Eat

Sichuan food aka 四川菜 or Szechwan as they spell it in L.A., is always fun to eat once in a while. Mainly because it lights your mouth on fiyahhhhhhh! It's actually a different type of spicy. Sichuan food has a "tingly, numbing" 麻 spicy taste in the mouth. There's also a lot of garlic, chili, ginger, and pickling of other spicy herbs involved. Enter Yu Sichuan, a place I've blogged about before. This time though, we got some new dishes.
Thinly sliced pork covered in chili. I'm pretty good at eating spicy but I had to try my best to wipe off the chili but even then it was still spicy.
Here was our  vegetarian sampler, with wood ear (a fungus), braised eggplant, and cucumber. Yum! But damn, spicy!!
Our spicy bean sprouts! Koreans would love this!
Spicy cold chicken. My mouth was on fire!
Here was our order of mild dan dan noodles. Of course even mild at this place was the equivalent of burning your insides.
Here was the only non spicy thing they had. Salt & peppered pork intestine soup with noodles. This was yummy. Too bad after awhile everything started to taste spicy. I ended up dunking everything else in this soup trying to wash off the chili. It didn't help much though.
My sister & I both ordered 2 drinks each and that still wasn't enough.
Look at all that chili & oil floating on the surface. This place does not mess around!

Our meal was quite delicious though despite the fact our mouths were on fire. My sister had tears in her eyes & couldn't feel her tongue the rest of the night!

If you are brave enough, go check it out!
Happy Burning & Happy Eatings!
